Mehno: Pirates erred in releasing Arroyo
By John Mehno, Times Sports Correspondent
Published: Sunday, May 3, 2009 12:15 AM EDT
Bronson Arroyo pitched a good game against the Pirates Friday night, working the first eight innings of the Cincinnati Reds’ 4-0 victory.Arroyo was drafted by the Pirates on the third round in 1995. He debuted with them in 2000 and posted a 9-14 record in parts of three seasons. Then one day he was gone, and his departure had its roots in his dyed hair.Arroyo and teammate Jimmy Anderson got their hair colored one day in 2003. If they were aiming for blonde, it missed and came out closer to green. They didn’t seem to mind. But while their peers laughed, manager Lloyd McClendon fumed. He decided that green hair was just more evidence that Arroyo was a goof who lacked dedication. Arroyo was quickly back in the minor leagues. When the Pirates had a roster issue the next spring, the decision was made to drop Arroyo, even though he had not yet reached arbitration eligibility. The Boston Red Sox claimed him on waivers. He was 24-19 in three seasons for Boston. Then he was traded to Cincinnati and has gone 42-38 for the Reds. He’s won 75 games. Of the Pirates’ five starters in 2003, only Jeff Suppan has won more games than Arroyo.Kip Wells, Jeff D’Amico, Josh Fogg and Kris Benson are all short of Arroyo’s win total. But none of them ever showed up with green hair.Sometimes bad personnel decisions are based on the strangest of reasons.Make enough of them, and you have a 16-year losing streak.

Bronson on Manny
By now I'm sure everybody has heard about the whole Manny Ramirez scandal. Here's what Bronson had to say on the subject:
"It's kind of shocking that he got caught up in anything, honestly," Arroyo said. "Manny likes to play stupid, but he's a pretty bright guy. And he's definitely aware of a lot of things that he tries to act like he's completely oblivious to."
And by the way, to answer the question from my last post (is there anything Bronson can't do?) apparently it's pitch against Milwaukee. 9 runs in less than 2 innings? Suckdom.

Bronson to co-produce a movie!
Hey there, sorry for the lack of updates. I've had a few personal issues I've been dealing with but hopefully the updates will be like they used to.
Bronson has been doing really good so far *knock on wood*, he's 4-1. Tonight he faces Manny Para of the Milwaukee Brewers at 7:10.
ANYWAY, I just got word that Bronson will be producing a movie called "The Sixth Family". It will be starring William Demeo and Ice T. It's not too clear what it's going to be about, I do know it involves the mafia and drug dealers. Production starts this summer.
Is there anything Bronson can't do?

Like Buttah...
is how Bronson pitched last night. 6 innings, 4 hits, 1 run. Reds won 6-1. He looked excellent.

BRONSON WINS! BRONSON WINS!
So...BRONSON WON! Indeed he won his first game of the season yesterday against The Mets with the final score of 8-6. He didn't look his best, but he wasn't his worst either. The offense really helped him out (the defense? yeah, not so much.). He even had a sacrifice bunt at the plate. YAY BRONSON!

Ignore the last post...
Apparently Dusty decided to believe Bronson when he said he's feeling better after the Cortosone shot and now he will be pitching on Thursday afterall. I'm excited!

Bronson's start moved
So it was announced that Bronson will start next Sunday instead of Thursday in order to give his pitching hand a few extra days of rest. Homer Bailey was demoted to triple A which allowed Bronson to avoid going on the DL. He recieved a Cortisone shot yesterday and said he already feels better, and that the tingling sensation is already gone. He's "pumped" to even play catch. lol. Good sign.

First Start? Maybe not...
"Reds on the mound: Arroyo didn't have the final tuneup he was hoping for, allowing six runs on seven hits, including two homers, and two walks in three innings. Arroyo struck out four."-Reds.com
Doesn't look too good for his start on April 9th. I would imagine he'll either go on the 15 day DL to see if they can get him straightened out or they'll just skip him in the rotation once and let Homer Bailey start in his place. If he does miss a start, it will be a first for him.

Ouch...
Yeah...10 runs allowed in 4 innings of work yesterday, that's all I have to say about that. It was painful to listen to but much like someone watching a car crash I just couldn't pull myself away.
Here's another article about his Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
http://www.heraldtribune.com/article/20090330/ARTICLE/903301037/-1/NEWSSITEMAP
I really hope it doesn't end up putting an end to his career. That would blow chunks.

Random things
So when Bronson pitched against the Sox he didn't exactly kick ass (as you probably know by now) and the MLB channel didn't exactly kick ass either because they blacked out the game!
Bronson's next start came against the Reds minor league team where he allowed six runs...oy.
Here is a good article from Sports Illustrated. I didn't know Bronson's Carpal Tunnel Syndrome was this bad...poor baby: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/ted_keith/03/27/reds.rotation/?eref=sircrc

Bronson against Red Sox tonight
So...it's finally happening again, Bronson will be pitching against the Sox tonight at Ed Smith Stadium at 7:05 P.M. For those of you who get the MLB channel, it shall be on. I'm planning to watch and return with the recap. Good luck Bron Bron!
Oh and it will be three years ago tomorrow that he was traded (yes, I know the date...I'm well aware that I'm a freak.), so how sweet would it be if he could just kick some ass tonight?

Hellz yeah!
BRONSON ARROYO pitched four innings and held the Dutch to no runs, two hits, no walks and two strikeouts.“I played against Eugene Kingsale a long time in the minors and I know Randall Simon and that was about it,” said Arroyo.
“It was good because sometimes when you don’t know guys it makes you go a little harder. I don’t if these guys were A-Ballers or Triple-A guys or played in Mexico or don’t play at all. You just assume ev erybody is pretty darn good.”
"Pretty Darn good"? Has Bronson been watching Leave it to Beaver reruns this winter?

*Cracks Up*
Ah...this one just speaks for it's self:
Arroyo was all thumbs (texting)By Hal McCoy Friday, February 27, 2009, 01:09 PM
What do you think?
Bronson Arroyo spent at least two hours standing outside in the sun, near the Cincinnati Reds offices, wearing civvies and scrolling through his cellphone.“Do it about once a week,” he said.
“I’m so busy doing stuff around here that I can’t answer so everybody leaves me a text or a voicemail. I answer ‘em all, but I do it like once a week.“Some players are real jerks and don’t answer their messages, but I try to answer ‘em all,” he said.In between thumbing texts and answering voicemails, Arroyo said, “I can’t wait to get on the mound today. Feels like it has been a year-and-a-half since I pitched. I know we’ve been throwing on the back fields, but that’s not like facing hitters on the other team. And, for some reason, I feel so skinny.”
In the first inning, it was as if Arroyo sent texts to Philadelphia’s Sane Victorinio and Raul Ibanez to tell them what pitches were coming. Both doubled for a run as Arroyo appeared to be lobbing the ball.He was. He said he just tries to throw strikes in the first inning, get a feel for things. He’d rather give up hits than walk people and said, “No matter how established you are you don’t want to go out there and walk people. Shane Victroino (Philadelphia’s leadoff hitter) smoked that double off me, but I was happy that it was a good pitch.”He was more Arroyo-like in the second inning, going 1-
2-3.ARROYO’S POINT was well-proved by Philadelphia starter Andrew Carpenter, a rookie. He didn’t retire a batter at all, not one. He walked three, gave up three hits and four runs. He faced six hitters and all reached base. That spawned the down home hlumor of Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel, who said, “What did he do wrong? He didn’t get anybody out, that’s what he did wrong.”

Not bad for the first one!
Arroyo's final line: 2 IP, 1 ER, 2H, 1 BB, 0 K
"The first inning, you always feel like an alien out there for the first one - crazy," Arroyo said. "Honestly, you don't know where any pitches are going. You have no idea if you'll bounce a changeup up there or paint it right on the black. In the second inning, I felt a little better. You start feeling like you're in the pocket a little more.
"It was actually a good first inning. I will take that first inning over an eight-pitch inning based on the fact you need some pounding on the arm. It's impossible to get it any other way than out there with the adrenaline going. I will be a little sore tomorrow, which is nice."
He enjoys being a little sore does he? Sorry, sorry.

Bronson Vs. Phillies tomorrow at 1:05! I don't think the game is being broadcast anywhere but there are other ways to see how our boy is doing (Basically the scoreboard at mlb.com). Yay! Baseball officially starts with Bronson's first pitch...at least for me.

Dusty REALLY doesn't want Bronson to slide again
The Reds practiced sliding Monday, but feet first only because Baker is not a fan of head-first slides and said, "I prefer my guys don't go head first and I REALLY prefer Bronson Arroyo not do it any more. Remember that one last year? I almost had a fit."
Since when was he a lefty?
Did he switch it up on me?
(from betfirms.com)
Pitching:
There is no question that the ace of the future is the very talented Edinson Volquez, who finished the season with a 17-6 record on a team that was not so good. The opening day starter could be Aaron Harang, but the Reds can’t afford to suffer through another 17 losses from Harang in 2009. Bronson Arroyo is a nice No. 3 starter, as the lefty posted a career high 15 wins last season, and could be ready for a monster year. Johnny Cueto is the teams No.4 starter, and they hope he can improve on his 9-14 record in his first full year in the majors. The final spot in the rotation will be between Ramon Ramirez, Micah Owings, and Homer Bailey, with Ramirez looking like he holds the early edge. The bullpen might be even better this season, as they have a great mix of young and veteran arms to get the ball into the hands of closer Francisco Cordero. Veterans David Weathers and Arthur Rhodes will be the main setup men, but keep a close eye on the young arms of Jared Burton and Bill Bray. Bet Reds +600 odds to win NL Central at Sportsbook.com
It's nice that they think he could have a "Monster Year" though. :)

Run Bronson, Run!
Saw this this morning.
Running overrated
Pitcher Bronson Arroyo was shaking his head after a morning session in which he had to run a mile on the elliptical machine in less than 7 minutes and 30 seconds.
"They're trying to kill me," he said. "I did it in seven minutes, but my back will lock up for a week.
"Running for pitchers is the most overrated thing in baseball," he added. "The only time we run is from first to third and we don't even have to do that in the American League."
One mile in 7 minutes? Ick! I'd be pissed too.

Well, that er..sounds good...kinda.
From John Fay's blog:
Finally, I talked a bit to Bronson Arroyo, the most honest man in the clubhouse. He has concerns about this year's club: “You always come into camp optimistic. But I figure after ’06 coming to ’07, I thought we had a pretty good club and he didn’t do anything. I’m not going to make any predictions on anybody else’s behalf but mine.”“I’m definitely happy with our defense. I honestly think our pitching staff is more solid than it’s ever been. It’s going to come down to being able to score some runs. If we can put runs on the board, I don’t see how we can’t at least compete.”“It’s more risky this year than ever because of the eight guys who are hitting in the lineup a good amount of them haven’t really proved themselves in the major leagues.”As for Arroyo's prediction on Arroyo: "I feel like I’ll throw 200 innings and hopefully win 15 games.”

Bronson's vacay officially OVER!
Pitchers and catchers reported to Spring Training in Sarasota this morning, that being said I'm sure it was the earliest Bronson has been awake since the last day game last year. Poor Boy.
Anyway, hopefully I'll be able to update this thing a hell of alot more with pictures and info coming in. :)
YAY SPRING IS ALMOST HERE! MORE IMPORTANTLY BASEBALL IS ALMOST HERE! :)

Bronson was the victim of Roid Rage!
As everybody probably knows by now A-Fraud tested positive for Steroids in 2003 (I'm so glad this came out, Karma's a bitch!), I found this person's comment hilarious:
“Now we know [that Rodriguez knocking the ball out of Bronson Arroyo’s glove in 2004] wasn’ta bitch slap, it was ’roid rage.”
It's so true! Poor Bronson, I wonder if he's in therapy for the trauma.

Lack of updates
Hey,
I am so sorry for the lack of updates, but I picked the wrong damn time to start a blog about a baseball player! Apparently, they do NOTHING news-worthy until the spring (except those that have the double life as rock stars...yet still only make the news like twice in the winter). I promise to update as soon as Bronson decides to be fun!
I can't wait for the actual season, where I will have content for the blog AT LEAST every five days.
Until then...please keep reading.

Ya know what?
I am so sick of people blaming Bronson's enjoyment of playing music WHEN HE'S NOT PLAYING BASEBALL for him struggling at certain times during the season. Could it be that it's just not very easy to pitch sometimes? No way...
Arroyo's sideline as a rock musician, Brennaman noted, may have hampered his pitching.
"It's always been a distraction,'' he said. "He's got to concentrate on baseball and put music in the backseat until the baseball season is over. He's got to put two good halves together, and there's no reason why he shouldn't be able to.''
GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!

It BETTER be five (good) years, mister!
"I feel I'm in the peak of my career right now," Arroyo said. "With Boston I was finding my way in the league. Now, I feel like I've established myself and the pitcher I'm going to be. I feel like I can ride it out. I feel I've got three, four, five good years in me."
Baseball without Bronson? Blasphemy!

Boston Herald article 3/21/2006
Bronson, the joke is on you
By: Gerry Callahan
"You bleeped up. You trusted us."-Otter to flounder in "Animal House"
Maybe someday we'll understand why the Red Sox traded away a 29-year-old pitcher who never iced, never whined, never called his manager an idiot and never wanted to play anywhere but Boston. And maybe we'll eventually fall in love with young Willy Mo Pena, who was "No.1 in the big leagues" as Theo Epstein explained yesterday, "in strikeouts-per-at-bat last season."
Pena may thrive in FenwayPark and in the Sox' lineup. And he may make Theo look as smart as the last big, powerful, underachieving Dominican slugger made him look. Maybe Pena will turn out to be another Papi-sized steal, a guy who finally reaches his potential and becomes a super star, not just a serviceable major leaguer. And maybe Arroyo will never again win as many as 14 games.
Maybe it will all make perfect baseball sense by midseason. For now, however we can't overlook the grave injustice the Sox have committed. This better turn out to be a brilliant deal because what the Sox did to the entire baseball world is close to the unpardonable sin.
The Red Sox yesterday, made agents and the player's union look good. They gave tons of ammunition to all those smarmy charactors who tell the players that there is no loyalty in the game, that they must live their lives like mercenaries and never, ever trust the fat cats across the table.
It wasn't a violation of the rules of baseball, but it's like steroids or greenies: maybe someday.
While kids across New England were taking down the Bronson Arroyo posters from their bedroom walls yesterday, agents were doing the opposite. Arroyo is their poster child now. They're going to put his picture up in their offices, a pointed reminder to any client who might be thinking about giving his ballclub a hometown discount.
This is what happens, son. This is what they do to guys who give away two years of arbitration and sign for below market value. They ship them off to Cincinnati. Do you want to be the next Bronson Arroyo?
Indeed, there's a new verb in the agents' lexicon. If you get traded after giving the team the hometown discount and telling everyone how much you love your employer, than you've been Bronsoned.
Do you want to get Bronsoned? Wake up, kid, or you're gonna get Bronsoned.
The Red Sox yesterday denied ever assuring Arroyo that they'd hang onto him after he signed a three-year, $11.25 million deal on Jan. 19.
"There was no handshake, no gentleman's agreement." Theo Epstein said.
That may be true, but so is this: Arroyo thought he had atleast bought himself another season with the Sox by stepping over his agent's dead body and signing the deal.
Here's what he said when he reported to spring training a month ago: "As long as they gave me somewhat of their word that they weren't planning to trade me right away, I felt comfortable."
The irony is that Arroyo probably still would be with the Sox if he wasn't so determined to, well, be with the Sox. Do you think the Reds would have wanted a guy who was on his way to arbitration after one season? Another 14-win season, and Arroyo would have approached Matt Clement on the salary scale.
When Jed Hoyer and Ben Cherington, the Red Sox' temporary co-GMs, signed Arroyo, they had to be thinking, "What a sucker." Which is precisely what Gregg Clifton, Arroyo's agent, was thinking. And shortly thereafter, the Sox' phones started ringing. Nice job tying up Flounder Arroyo , guys. So what do you want for him?
What the Red Sox untimatly got was 245 pounds of potential. In his last 647-at-bats, Pena has 224 strikeouts. His on base percentage last season(.304) was as ugly as Carmela without makeup. And his career OBP (.303 total, .285 against right-handers) is even worse. Of course, in Boston, he can be handled like a Hummel figurine, used only against left-handers and hidden behind Manny and Ortiz in the line up. And if it works out as the Sox hope, he'll be ready for full-time duty next season, when Trot Nixon's contract is up and/or his body gives out.
If the trade doesn't work out, the Sox still have six starters, including the anti-Arroyo, David Wells.
Still more irony for Bronson to digest as he departs: Wells, who demanded a trade in the offseason, still is spreading his charm throughout Red Sox camp. He showed up out of shape. He called his manager an idiot. He called the commisioner a piece of bleep. He complained about possibly being left out of the starting rotation at the beginning of the season.
Arroyo did none of the above. On the contrary, he said he'd gladly go to the bullpen. He'd do whatever his manager asked, whatever the team wanted.
Yesterday, the team wanted him to pack his bags and head to the Reds. The Sox played their resident rock star like a bass guitar and rewarded him for his loyalty with a bus ticket to Sarasota Fla.
In baseball, they've got a phrase for that now: He's been Bronsoned.

Three years ago today...
January 19th 2006-Bronson signed the deal that would eventually ship him out of Boston. I remember being so excited that day, and thinking that there was no way the Sox would screw him over so quickly after he gave them such a huge discount and had nothing but good things to say about the team and the owners...I was wrong.

Slow news day!
Good atricle about The Reds pitching staff:

I can't wait until Spring!
Where are they now-2004 World Series Style!
This is fairly self explanatory. :)
Alan Embree-Colorado Rockies
Bill Mueller-Retired
Bronson Arroyo-Cincinnati Reds (duh!)
Curt Schilling-Free agent (probably retiring...I can't see any team picking up 300 pounds of injured pitcher...unless they're stupid.)
Curtis Leskanic-Pro scouting talent for Red Sox
David Ortiz-Red Sox
Dave Roberts-San Francisco Giants
Derek Lowe-Atlanta Braves (He just signed a SWEET contract! Congrats D-Lowe!)
Doug Mientkiewicz-Free agent
Doug Maribelli-Free agent
Gabe Kapler-Tampa Bay Rays
Jason Varitek-Free agent (If the Red Sox let him go...Theo is going to a deeper level of hell than the one he's already going to.)
Johnny Damon-New York Yankees (BOOOO!!!HISSS!!!!!!!BOOOO!!!!!!!)
Keith Foulke-Free agent
Kevin Millar-Free agent
Kevin Youkilis-Red Sox (Another guy who just signed a SWEET contract)
Manny Ramirez-Free agent
Mark Bellhorn-No teams appear interested but he does own 4 Dunkin Donuts in the New England area, so don't feel too bad for him.
Mike Myers-Free agent
Mike Timlin-Free agent
Orlando Cabrera-Free agent
Pedro Martinez-Free agent
Pokey Reese-Free agent
Tim Wakefield-Red Sox
Trot Nixon-Milwaukee Brewers
Random side note: After seeing all of those guys on no actual team right now, I'm kinda glad Bronson is on the Reds...I will probably be taking that back within like a month of the season, after their horrible defense and hitting costs Bronson like 5 wins. For now, I'm happy.

Don't mention it...no really, don't mention it.
So Lance Berkman won the MVP award the other day and he thanked Mr. Arroyo for helping him:
“I want to thank (Cincinnati Reds pitcher) Bronson Arroyo for breaking Carlos Lee’s finger because he would have been up here instead of me,” said Berkman
Poor Bronson! He didn't mean to breake that dude's finger...I think.

Forget swinging a stick...
Could he even pick one up back then?
"I didn't want to pitch," Arroyo said. "I didn't want to sit on a bench for four days watching and twiddling my thumbs. But when you're 6-4, 150 lbs. in high school, I don't think they believe you can swing the stick."
Damn, I thought he was skinny NOW.

No Nomar!
There are rumors that the Reds are going after Nomar Garciaparra.
Dear Walt,
Do not...DO NOT! Go after Nomar!
The last thing you need is this washed up, overrated, crazy person influencing your young team. He was a good player for about five years...he is now a cancer in the club house.
Thanks! :)

Anybody remember this story?
Okay, this is insanely random, but does anybody remember Bronson telling a story about how when he was in a game as a rookie, he couldn't seem to focus and was getting pounded until his coach came out and called his catcher to come out to the mound, and the coach says "Bronson has pretty lips, doesn't he?" to the catcher and than he walked away. Bronson said that he was so distracted/freaked out by what his coach said that he pitched lights out for the rest of the game. lol.
I wish I could find that article. I'm not crazy, I promise!

Quote of the day :)
"At the end of the day, I get the win or loss and the ERA," he said. "If I'm going to look like an ass in the spotlight, I want to be the one deciding the pitches."

Last night! :)
There will be new pictures posted, I'm just waiting for my friend to send me them.
The picture of me and Bronson is pretty funny because I was telling her to "Hurry up"(because the people around him were insane, and he looked scared. lol)...so yeah, my mouth is open. He looks pretty damn hot though.
Songs of the night: "Painted it all Yellow" (which is the name of the song Bronson wrote according to my favorite blog, Toeing the rubber) and "Free Fallin'"
Quotes of the night: "I really didn't mean to hit A-Rod with that pitch."
"Obviously they want us to take a break so they can sell more alcohol..."

He has a bad cell phone
This is a pretty interesting interview from WEEI (he finally says he felt a little betrayed by the Red Sox!), even though his phone breaks up in the middle. lol.

I'm gonna post a full review tomorrow (when I'm sober) but I did get to meet him again, and he was soooo nice and soooooooooooo cute, lol. We were not supposed to be taking pics together... but I made sure he bended the rules. lol.
Me: Bronson, can we do something really quick?
Bronson: Yeah, what do you wanna do?
*I grab him, we smile*
Me: Thank you! :)

How did I miss the memo?
So Bronson was on Sports Late Night last night and I missed it? What on earth was I doing...ah yes sleeping, but that's besides the freaking point!
Anyway, luckily the good people at NECN have posted the videos already:
Ladies and gentlemen, the song Bronson wrote (I have no idea what it's called so for now it is "The song that Bronson wrote", wouldn't it be funny if that's really what it was called? That would be so Bronson):

There is also a nice lil interview:

Things to watch for...and other crapola.
So Friday night, I'm going to see Bronson at Patriot Place in Foxborro. When I told my best friend that I made this blog she said that she would take pictures with her nice camera so that I can post them here(because she totally rocks!). So be on the look out for those! I'm sure they'll be super hot.
A few new songs Bronson would sound good covering:
Whatever it takes-Lifehouse
Leave the light on-David Cook
Turn the car around-O.A.R
Did anybody see him sing his own song at Redsfest this year? I saw it live online, and it was REALLY good.

More Old Schoolness (is that a word?) and some random crap...

Bronson: I was asleep.
Reporter: Oh...late flight?
Bronson: No, I was hungover.
Reporter: Ohhhh....

Hi there!
Hey! If you're reading this that means that you stumbled upon my crazy lil blog! YAY!
Anyway, this blog is going to be completely devoted to my obsession (when I say obsession, I mean OBSESSION) with Cincinnati Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo. You can expect up to date news, videos, articles...and sometimes just my complete randomness.
Hopefully I'll be updating this at least five times a week, so check back often...and please, please, PLEASE leave comments. I love talking with other Bronson fans...and I'm pretty much chipping away at my families' sanity.
Lauren :)
P.S-I'm not actually from Ohio (I'm from Boston...Theo still blows for that horrible trade) so don't be shocked if I constantly spell Cincinnati wrong. I do it all the time.
P.P.S-I pretend the cornrows never happened...so if they are brought up ever again, I will get scared and start rocking back and fourth in a corner somewhere...just so ya know.
