Bronson Arroyo pitched a good game against the Pirates Friday night, working the first eight innings of the Cincinnati Reds’ 4-0 victory.Arroyo was drafted by the Pirates on the third round in 1995. He debuted with them in 2000 and posted a 9-14 record in parts of three seasons.Then one day he was gone, and his departure had its roots in his dyed hair.Arroyo and teammate Jimmy Anderson got their hair colored one day in 2003. If they were aiming for blonde, it missed and came out closer to green. They didn’t seem to mind.But while their peers laughed, manager Lloyd McClendon fumed.He decided that green hair was just more evidence that Arroyo was a goof who lacked dedication. Arroyo was quickly back in the minor leagues.When the Pirates had a roster issue the next spring, the decision was made to drop Arroyo, even though he had not yet reached arbitration eligibility. The Boston Red Sox claimed him on waivers.He was 24-19 in three seasons for Boston. Then he was traded to Cincinnati and has gone 42-38 for the Reds.He’s won 75 games. Of the Pirates’ five starters in 2003, only Jeff Suppan has won more games than Arroyo.Kip Wells, Jeff D’Amico, Josh Fogg and Kris Benson are all short of Arroyo’s win total.But none of them ever showed up with green hair.Sometimes bad personnel decisions are based on the strangest of reasons.Make enough of them, and you have a 16-year losing streak.

By now I'm sure everybody has heard about the whole Manny Ramirez scandal. Here's what Bronson had to say on the subject:

"It's kind of shocking that he got caught up in anything, honestly," Arroyo said. "Manny likes to play stupid, but he's a pretty bright guy. And he's definitely aware of a lot of things that he tries to act like he's completely oblivious to."

And by the way, to answer the question from my last post (is there anything Bronson can't do?) apparently it's pitch against Milwaukee. 9 runs in less than 2 innings? Suckdom.

Hey there, sorry for the lack of updates. I've had a few personal issues I've been dealing with but hopefully the updates will be like they used to.

Bronson has been doing really good so far *knock on wood*, he's 4-1. Tonight he faces Manny Para of the Milwaukee Brewers at 7:10.

ANYWAY, I just got word that Bronson will be producing a movie called "The Sixth Family". It will be starring William Demeo and Ice T. It's not too clear what it's going to be about, I do know it involves the mafia and drug dealers. Production starts this summer.

Is there anything Bronson can't do?

So...BRONSON WON! Indeed he won his first game of the season yesterday against The Mets with the final score of 8-6. He didn't look his best, but he wasn't his worst either. The offense really helped him out (the defense? yeah, not so much.). He even had a sacrifice bunt at the plate. YAY BRONSON!

Apparently Dusty decided to believe Bronson when he said he's feeling better after the Cortosone shot and now he will be pitching on Thursday afterall. I'm excited!

So it was announced that Bronson will start next Sunday instead of Thursday in order to give his pitching hand a few extra days of rest. Homer Bailey was demoted to triple A which allowed Bronson to avoid going on the DL. He recieved a Cortisone shot yesterday and said he already feels better, and that the tingling sensation is already gone. He's "pumped" to even play catch. lol. Good sign.

Doesn't look too good for his start on April 9th. I would imagine he'll either go on the 15 day DL to see if they can get him straightened out or they'll just skip him in the rotation once and let Homer Bailey start in his place. If he does miss a start, it will be a first for him.

Pitching:
There is no question that the ace of the future is the very talented Edinson Volquez, who finished the season with a 17-6 record on a team that was not so good. The opening day starter could be Aaron Harang, but the Reds can’t afford to suffer through another 17 losses from Harang in 2009. Bronson Arroyo is a nice No. 3 starter, as the lefty posted a career high 15 wins last season, and could be ready for a monster year. Johnny Cueto is the teams No.4 starter, and they hope he can improve on his 9-14 record in his first full year in the majors. The final spot in the rotation will be between Ramon Ramirez, Micah Owings, and Homer Bailey, with Ramirez looking like he holds the early edge. The bullpen might be even better this season, as they have a great mix of young and veteran arms to get the ball into the hands of closer Francisco Cordero. Pitcher Bronson Arroyo was shaking his head after a morning session in which he had to run a mile on the elliptical machine in less than 7 minutes and 30 seconds.

I am so sorry for the lack of updates, but I picked the wrong damn time to start a blog about a baseball player! Apparently, they do NOTHING news-worthy until the spring (except those that have the double life as rock stars...yet still only make the news like twice in the winter). I promise to update as soon as Bronson decides to be fun!

I can't wait for the actual season, where I will have content for the blog AT LEAST every five days.

I am so sick of people blaming Bronson's enjoyment of playing music WHEN HE'S NOT PLAYING BASEBALL for him struggling at certain times during the season. Could it be that it's just not very easy to pitch sometimes? No way...

Arroyo's sideline as a rock musician, Brennaman noted, may have hampered his pitching.

Maybe someday we'll understand why the Red Sox traded away a 29-year-old pitcher who never iced, never whined, never called his manager an idiot and never wanted to play anywhere but Boston. And maybe we'll eventually fall in love with young Willy Mo Pena, who was "No.1 in the big leagues" as Theo Epstein explained yesterday, "in strikeouts-per-at-bat last season."

Pena may thrive in FenwayPark and in the Sox' lineup. And he may make Theo look as smart as the last big, powerful, underachieving Dominican slugger made him look. Maybe Pena will turn out to be another Papi-sized steal, a guy who finally reaches his potential and becomes a super star, not just a serviceable major leaguer. And maybe Arroyo will never again win as many as 14 games.

Maybe it will all make perfect baseball sense by midseason. For now, however we can't overlook the grave injustice the Sox have committed. This better turn out to be a brilliant deal because what the Sox did to the entire baseball world is close to the unpardonable sin.

The Red Sox yesterday, made agents and the player's union look good.They gave tons of ammunition to all those smarmy charactors who tell the players that there is no loyalty in the game, that they must live their lives like mercenaries and never, ever trust the fat cats across the table.

It wasn't a violation of the rules of baseball, but it's like steroids or greenies: maybe someday.

While kids across New England were taking down the Bronson Arroyo posters from their bedroom walls yesterday, agents were doing the opposite. Arroyo is their poster child now. They're going to put his picture up in their offices, a pointed reminder to any client who might be thinking about giving his ballclub a hometown discount.

This is what happens, son. This is what they do to guys who give away two years of arbitration and sign for below market value. They ship them off to Cincinnati. Do you want to be the next Bronson Arroyo?

Indeed, there's a new verb in the agents' lexicon. If you get traded after giving the team the hometown discount and telling everyone how much you love your employer, than you've been Bronsoned.

Do you want to get Bronsoned? Wake up, kid, or you're gonna get Bronsoned.

The Red Sox yesterday denied ever assuring Arroyo that they'd hang onto him after he signed a three-year, $11.25 million deal on Jan. 19.
"There was no handshake, no gentleman's agreement." Theo Epstein said.

That may be true, but so is this: Arroyo thought he had atleast bought himself another season with the Sox by stepping over his agent's dead body and signing the deal.

Here's what he said when he reported to spring training a month ago: "As long as they gave me somewhat of their word that they weren't planning to trade me right away, I felt comfortable."

The irony is that Arroyo probably still would be with the Sox if he wasn't so determined to, well, be with the Sox. Do you think the Reds would have wanted a guy who was on his way to arbitration after one season? Another 14-win season, and Arroyo would have approached Matt Clement on the salary scale.

When Jed Hoyer and Ben Cherington, the Red Sox' temporary co-GMs, signed Arroyo, they had to be thinking, "What a sucker." Which is precisely what Gregg Clifton, Arroyo's agent, was thinking. And shortly thereafter, the Sox' phones started ringing. Nice job tying up Flounder Arroyo , guys. So what do you want for him?

What the Red Sox untimatly got was 245 pounds of potential. In his last 647-at-bats, Pena has 224 strikeouts. His on base percentage last season(.304) was as ugly as Carmela without makeup. And his career OBP (.303 total, .285 against right-handers) is even worse. Of course, in Boston, he can be handled like a Hummel figurine, used only against left-handers and hidden behind Manny and Ortiz in the line up. And if it works out as the Sox hope, he'll be ready for full-time duty next season, when Trot Nixon's contract is up and/or his body gives out.

If the trade doesn't work out, the Sox still have six starters, including the anti-Arroyo, David Wells.

Still more irony for Bronson to digest as he departs: Wells, who demanded a trade in the offseason, still is spreading his charm throughout Red Sox camp. He showed up out of shape. He called his manager an idiot. He called the commisioner a piece of bleep. He complained about possibly being left out of the starting rotation at the beginning of the season.

Arroyo did none of the above. On the contrary, he said he'd gladly go to the bullpen. He'd do whatever his manager asked, whatever the team wanted.

Yesterday, the team wanted him to pack his bags and head to the Reds. The Sox played their resident rock star like a bass guitar and rewarded him for his loyalty with a bus ticket to Sarasota Fla.

In baseball, they've got a phrase for that now: He's been Bronsoned.

January 19th 2006-Bronson signed the deal that would eventually ship him out of Boston. I remember being so excited that day, and thinking that there was no way the Sox would screw him over so quickly after he gave them such a huge discount and had nothing but good things to say about the team and the owners...I was wrong.

Okay, this is insanely random, but does anybody remember Bronson telling a story about how when he was in a game as a rookie, he couldn't seem to focus and was getting pounded until his coach came out and called his catcher to come out to the mound, and the coach says "Bronson has pretty lips, doesn't he?" to the catcher and than he walked away. Bronson said that he was so distracted/freaked out by what his coach said that he pitched lights out for the rest of the game. lol.
I wish I could find that article. I'm not crazy, I promise!

So Friday night, I'm going to see Bronson at Patriot Place in Foxborro. When I told my best friend that I made this blog she said that she would take pictures with her nice camera so that I can post them here(because she totally rocks!). So be on the look out for those! Hey! If you're reading this that means that you stumbled upon my crazy lil blog! YAY!

Anyway, this blog is going to be completely devoted to my obsession (when I say obsession, I mean OBSESSION) with Cincinnati Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo. You can expect up to date news, videos, articles...and sometimes just my complete randomness.

Hopefully I'll be updating this at least five times a week, so check back often...and please, please, PLEASE leave comments. I love talking with other Bronson fans...and I'm pretty much chipping away at my families' sanity.
